Chapter Six

Kane opened the membrane door to his family’s lavish apartments with a quiet heart. He felt calm. Settled in a way that he’d never felt before. The driving urgency to prove himself rested. It hadn’t been replaced, but it shared space now with curiosity and a sense of wonder. His world had tilted down on that icy moon. Maybe it was the snow and the cold. Or maybe Hendrix was to blame. The man had rubbed off on him after over twelve hours of close contact.

Well. He’d done a lot more than rub one off.

And Kane had done worse.

Kane smiled at the memory of Hendrix’s lips against his, dry and soft.

He pulled himself into the apartments by the white lace guyline. Part of him still saw it as a useless decoration, but now he had more appreciation for his mother’s decorative choices. The lace was just one example of the many and far-reaching contacts his family kept between rival Queenships. No one on Artio tatted their own lace. It came from an isolated little colony deep in McLaren-controlled space. And no one on Artio could call up a McLaren citizen over three thousand light years away and order a batch of lace for next week.

Well, maybe Raleigh could, with the way queenships were psychically connected.

But for the average socialite, a hundred yards of hand-tatted McLaren lace in these apartments used for something as minor as a guyline meant that the Carter family had connections across the galaxy. Connections that could be traded for knowledge, favors, or anything else.

The same way Crane controlled the only warp gate large enough to send ships to the center of the galaxy and could charge a fortune in goods for its use, Kane’s family controlled access to people and knowledge. Arguably the only currency worth collecting in a post-currency universe.

Kane had been so blinded by his pursuit to be the best kingship pilot in order to take a seat beside the queenship’s pilot himself, he’d never realized there were other methods of gaining Raleigh’s attention. Methods that his family had been pursuing for generations.

He understood now why his parents had contracted a marriage with Hendrix. The man didn’t have to come from any upper echelon of society. He’d cultivated a skill with fabric and accessories that meshed with Kane’s family goals. Society influence and connections.

Tatted lace was useless unless someone knew how to string it across a room and secure it to safety and emergency standards.

Hendrix himself had done the work, been in these very apartments while Kane wore kingship blinders and spent his days training to be the best.

And somehow Hendrix still gave Kane a real run for his money at the finals. Before their crews had conspired to send them down to Neta 2 for half a day to work out their differences.

Kane shook his head. Even just yesterday he would have cornered his second, Ciara, and ripped her to shreds for contriving to put him together with Hendrix. Even if it had been after Basalt threw the winning shot.
